Prime Minister Rowley meets with National Advisory Committee

Prime Minister Dr the Hon. Keith Rowley received the National Advisory Committee on Constitutional Reform’s report at Whitehall today (Friday 2nd August, 2024).

In January 2024, the seven-member committee was appointed to coordinate and lead a National Consultation on Constitutional Reform.

Their mandate was to initiate and guide a national debate, generating proposals for legislative and constitutional reforms. The committee engaged citizens and stakeholders in Trinidad and Tobago and the diaspora through these consultations.

Attorney General and Minister of Legal Affairs, Senator the Hon. Reginald Armour SC, Minister of Energy and Energy Industries and Minister in the Office of the Prime Minister the Hon. Stuart Young SC and Minister of Housing and Urban Development, the Hon. Camille Robinson-Regis were in attendance at today’s meeting.

Members of the National Advisory Committee present at today’s meeting were Chairman, Mr Barendra Sinanan, Dr. Terrence Farrell, Mr Raye Sandy, Mr Winston Rudder, and Mr Nizam Mohammed. Ms Hema Narinesingh and Ms Helen Drayton were unavoidably absent from today’s meeting.

The Government thanked Mrs. Jacqui Sampson-Meiguel for her service, noting that she had to resign from the committee upon her appointment as Ombudsman of Trinidad and Tobago.

The committee provided Prime Minister Rowley and the Ministers with a summary of key issues raised during the constitutional consultation.

The report is to be presented to Cabinet who will initiate a public National Consultation on its proposals later this year.

Prime Minister Rowley will also seek Cabinet’s approval to extend the National Advisory Committee’s term to allow for broader discussions on constitutional reform, ensuring a wide population representation.
