The Opening of The Gran Chemin Fishing Facility

Residents of Moruga and environs can now welcome their new fishing centre. This as Prime Minister Dr the Hon. Keith Rowley officially commissioned the Gran Chemin Fishing Centre today (Friday 31st January, 2025).

Located at La Lune Road, Moruga, the new facility replaces a dilapidated structure and marks Phase 1 of the Moruga Fishing Port project. The centre, a collaboration between the National Infrastructure Development Company Limited (NIDCO) and the Ministry of Works and Transport, aims to boost retail fishing opportunities and modernise the industry in South Trinidad.

In delivering his feature address, Dr Rowley said by building the infrastructure the government’s “investment identifies a future in the diversification effort of the nation”. He encouraged young people to not take these investments lightly but to take advantage of the opportunities particularly in agriculture and fishing, to develop businesses along the South Coast.

The new Gran Chemin Fishing Centre will offer the following:

– Wholesale and retail market stalls

– 91 storage units (lockers) for boat engines, equipment, and fishing supplies

– CCTV Surveillance

– Chillers and cold storage

– Water storage

– Waste Water Treatment plant

– Ample parking

– External solar-powered night lighting

– Security booth

Phase 2 of the Moruga Fishing Port project is expected to establish a sheltered Offshore Port.
