Post-Cabinet Media Briefing – Thursday 3rd April, 2025

Prime Minister the Hon. Stuart R. Young, SC made several announcements at the Post-Cabinet Media Briefing held at Whitehall today (Thursday 3rd April, 2025).

The Cabinet has approved an ex gratia payment of one million dollars each, for the families of the divers who died in the tragic incident at Paria Fuel Trading Company Limited and the sole survivor, Mr. Christopher Boodram.

The Ministry of Trade and Industry and the Ministry of Foreign and Caricom Affairs will meet with the United States Embassy to discuss the details of the U.S. President’s announcement regarding a 10% tariff on all exports to the United States.
Prime Minister Young said, “What I can tell the population is that from an initial information perspective, it does not appear to be a blanket tariff of 10% on all goods exported from Trinidad and Tobago into the United States … it appears, certain exceptions. … there is an opportunity for conversation with the United States.”

 

bp Trinidad and Tobago (bpTT) has announced that its Cypre development has successfully delivered its first gas.

Speaking at today’s Post-Cabinet Media Briefing, Prime Minister the Hon. Stuart R. Young, SC highlighted this milestone as proof that Trinidad and Tobago’s gas strategy is not solely dependent on cross-border resources.

Prime Minister Young to Meet with Sandals 

Prime Minister the Hon. Stuart R. Young, SC, Chief Secretary of the Tobago House of Assembly the Hon. Farley Augustine and other stakeholders will meet with the Executive Chairman of Sandals and Beaches Resorts, Mr Adam Stewart, on Monday 7th April, 2025.

Last month, former Prime Minister Dr the Hon Keith Rowley announced that the Sandals Resorts Inc.’s leadership had agreed to revisit Tobago.

Today, Prime Minister Young described the meeting as a “fabulous opportunity” and said, “we need to learn from the mistakes of the past and not allow a few misguided naysayers to stop the potential development of the economy of Tobago.”
