Sod- Turning Ceremony New Palo Seco Velodrome
The community of Palo Seco and environs will be home to a revitalised velodrome as Prime Minister Dr the Hon. Keith Rowley officially turned the sod for the construction of the New Palo Seco Velodrome yesterday (Friday 28th July, 2023).
Located along the SS Erin Main Road, Palo Seco, the facility will be used to host a range of sporting events and activities essential for the community’s success and growth.
The refurbishment works at the velodrome will see:
– The rehabilitation of the existing athletic field, running track and cycling track.
– The restoration of the Sports Club House.
– The construction of a new Spectator Pavilion to accommodate approximately a minimum of 1,000 people and the construction of a new athlete pavilion to accommodate approximately a minimum of 500 people.
Delivering the feature address Prime Minister Rowley said, “It is the deliberate policy of the Government of Trinidad and Tobago that we invest continuously in our youth and in our community … we want to bring opportunity so that no child will be deprived that opportunity because of where they reside in this country.
The intention is that every talented willing child or parent anywhere in this country must have access to these facilities regardless of where they live or where they go to school.”
Turning his attention to cricket, Prime Minister Rowley plans to inspire club cricket in schools and communities across the region. Dr Rowley will propose to the cabinet an initiative which provides further support for club cricket throughout Trinidad and Tobago.
He said,“The intention would be to encourage more young people at the school level (Primary School into Secondary School) and create a foundation and increase the management capabilities of the sport.”
Minister of Sport and Community Development, the Hon. Shamfa Cudjoe, Minister of Energy and Energy Industries, Minister in the Office of the Prime Minister, the Hon. Stuart Young, Minister of Labour and Member of Parliament for La Brea, the Hon Stephen Mc Clashie and Member of Parliament for Point Fortin, the Hon. Kennedy Richards Jr were also present at yesterday’s event.
